Giving Back Matters

Every year, Distributor Wire & Cable (DWC) customers look forward to the NFL pick ‘em challenge at the beginning of football season. Within DWC, employees get excited for a league of their own. Each year, a few DWC’ers play in a buy-in fantasy football league where the winner takes the pot. But this year, they did things differently.

In previous years, this fantasy league was a fun way for DWC’ers to pass the time and make some money. Moe Mao, Logistics Specialist in Seattle, is one of the organizers. Before the season started, he talked to his fellow league members to propose a new idea about what to do with the winnings.

“The fantasy football league was a way for us to get to know people across the company and connect on something positive. I saw an opportunity for us to join together and Give Back, A Lot by suggesting to the league that this year’s winner donates their winnings to a charity of their choice,” said Moe Mao.

The participants agreed! This year’s league champion would donate their winnings to a charity of their choice.

With this new rule set in place, they ended up having the biggest cash pool in league history, totaling near $900! Moe won the fantasy league, taking the league’s championship belt and his charitable winnings.

Moe announced that his winnings would be donated to the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation Sports Matter Program. This organization helps fund youth athletic programs where funding has been cut, leaving millions of students unable to play. Since 2014, the Foundation, together with DICK’S Sporting Goods, has pledged over $50 million.

After that, Moe and his manager, Eric Hackler, Logistics District Manager, drove to their local DICK’s Sporting Goods to present the donation. As an added gesture, they also treated the store employees to doughnuts. The employee that accepted the donation was moved by the gesture and said it is not every day that their foundation gets that kind of recognition. With this donation, the program will continue to give children the opportunity to play sports.

As you can see, DWC’ers act on our company value Give Back, A Lot. Sometimes, one person’s idea can become a great opportunity to pay it forward.
